It's National Teacher Appreciation Week!
Mrs. Heidi Sutherlin is a Special Education teacher at Red Hill High School. She has been employed at Red Hill for five years. Prior to working at Red Hill, she taught Preschool for 20 years. Mrs. Sutherlin received her Associate’s degree from Vincennes University and then transferred to Indiana State University to complete her Bachelor’s degree . She obtained her Master’s degree in Special Education from Indiana Wesleyan University. Mrs. Sutherlin originally thought she would like to be a veterinarian but then decided she did not want to have to put animals to sleep. After taking a child care class at Red Hill and then assisting in a kindergarten class, Mrs. Sutherlin knew she was meant to be a teacher. She fell in love with teaching Special Education through the joy she saw in her professors at Vincennes University.
Mrs. Sutherlin connects with students by learning about their passions and basing their education on their strengths. She works with her students to continuously work and learn together. Mrs. Sutherlin’s favorite part of the school day is her Reading Skills Class. This class has a mixture of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. She enjoys seeing the juniors set a good example for the younger students and appreciates seeing striving students wanting to do better themselves. Her favorite teaching resource is CK12 for textbooks for any subject. At BGS, Mrs. Sutherlin faced the challenge of a student who could not recognize his alphabet letters. She knew of his love for Spongebob so she made him Spongebob alphabet cards. Her proudest moments as a teacher are watching her students through grades 9-12 and then graduate. Something Mrs. Sutherlin could not live without is “pencil and paper”. She would much rather use pencil and paper over modern technology. Her best teacher advice is to take everything, “One day at a time”.
Mrs. Sutherlin’s family includes her husband, Stephen, her daughter, Chastity, and her son, Jonny. Outside of school, Mrs. Sutherlin’s greatest joy is being a grandma to her grandchildren, Gloria (5) Buck (2), and Elliott (1). She also enjoys camping with her family. Her favorite snack is Hot Tamales.

Each day you will see new posts that will highlight the teachers, administrators, and staff of Red Hill Jr/Sr High School. These spotlights are a testament to the dedication and hard work put forth by our teachers and staff, who have tirelessly worked to support the growth and development of our students.
To begin our week, we will start with Mrs. Cathy Wirth! Mrs. Wirth is the 8th grade English teacher at Red Hill High School with a teaching experience of 31 years with 24 of those years being spent at Red Hill as a teacher. Her courses consist of English, ELA, and her Grammar and Literature class.
When asked about what inspired her to become a teacher, Mrs. Wirth said, “I’ve always liked school and I like being around young adults so I guess I’ve just always wanted to be a teacher.” She believes that her career as a teacher was a sort of “calling” as if she was just always meant to be one. Mrs. Wirth testifies that “some people are just meant to become teachers.”
She believes that the trick to her success as a teacher has to do with how she treats her students. Instead of treating them like unruly children, Mrs. Wirth prefers to speak with them as young adults and try to learn from them as well. Although, something that can often interrupt the workflow of her classroom is whenever students don’t agree with each other or even with herself. However, Mrs. Wirth believes that the key to this conflict is communication, which is a very important life skill that she deems necessary for success. Similarly, one of her biggest challenges as a teacher is trying to remind students the importance of learning. In order to combat this, Mrs. Wirth puts an effort to try and make her students think about what they’d like to do in the future whenever they're older so that they’ll make the educated decision in applying themselves to their studies. After all, Mrs. Wirth’s biggest priority in teaching is seeing her students succeed in life as it is also one of her proudest moments in teaching. She loves it whenever she comes into contact with some of her former students and gets to see how happy and successful they are years after they’ve graduated.
Mrs. Wirth claims that some of the best teaching advice she’d ever received is to “be flexible and keep a sense of humor” which can come in handy whenever you’re teaching younger students within high school, such as 8th graders. For other teachers, her most recommended book on education is Teach Like Your Hair’s On Fire by Rafe Esquith. Another tool that Mrs. Wirth finds particularly handy and encourages other teachers to use modern technology, especially videos. She frequently uses topic related videos and movies within her classroom as a means of education, choosing specific ones that show connection to what she is currently teaching or that might resonate with her students.
In Mrs. Wirth’s personal time, she enjoys reading, walking, yard work, and traveling whenever she can. During school, her favorite time of the day is quiet reading time because it gives her a chance to think, read, and enjoy the silence every now and again. Overall, Mrs. Wirth is a very peaceful teacher who just wants the best for her students.

MTC Conference Champs - Congratulations to our RHHS Girls Track Team on a 1st place conference win. Congratulations to the RHHS Boys Track on a 3rd place finish.
There will be no varsity baseball game this evening. The JV team will travel to Mt. Carmel with a 4:30 start time.
RHHS Varsity Baseball will play Wednesday @ Waltonville with a start time of 4:30. There will be no JV game vs. L-ville on Wednesday.
Just a friendly reminder. Promenade will begin at 7 p.m. with the coronation immediately following. The doors will open at 6:15 and there will be a charge of $1 for all adults attending.
Tonights Boys Track Meet in Newton will start at 4:30 with field events and 5:30 with running events.
RHHS Baseball will play Waltonville tomorrow night at 4:30 at the tank farm.

(There were some papers sent home saying that it was on the 15th, but we moved it due to a conflict.)
We are having an extra rehearsal on Monday May 15th, so please make sure your student brings their music and their recorder on Monday and Tuesday.

Sumner Attendance Center Music Parents!
Our Spring Concert will be on Thursday, May 11th at 7pm in the SAC Gym. 5th/6th Choir students need to be in their places on the risers at 6:45pm. The 5th and 6th Grade band students need to be in the band room at 6:15 to get warmed up and seated for the concert. Please have your student dress in Spring Colors!

The 4th graders participated in The Best Part of Me project where they chose one of their favorite features and wrote a poem about it. They all did a wonderful job!
At RHHS in Ms. Tussey's Career Explorations class, we have MANY guest speakers throughout the semester that talk about their career paths, their current jobs, advice on interviewing, and various life skills. We have some that are in-person and some virtual guest speakers.
To name a few, so far we've had:
-- JEREMY BUSCH: Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine who is the Head Football Athletic Trainer for the University of Illinois Athletics
-- BAILEY WHITE: Owner and operator of Bailey's Salon & Spa
--TIFFANI HIGGINBOTHAM: Vice President, Retail Operations Officer of Casey's State Bank
-- HEIDI MALLIN: Special Projects Manager of Lucas Oil Stadium
-- KEVIN ALEXANDER: Enlisted Accessions Recruiter of the United States Air Force
-- TRENT MASTERSON: Lawrence County Sherrif
-- DANNY ASH: Bridgeport Chief of Police
At RHHS in Ms. Tussey's Career Explorations class, we invited the team from the Illinois Extension program to teach about basic personal finances. They ran a real world simulation where students got to choose a career path, see what their paychecks would be, decide what type of housing to live in, and what car to drive, etc. They discussed how to write checks, creating a savings, and pay bills. They also had to decide whether they wanted pets or kids and deduct the corresponding amount for those costs too.
Lastly, the students were tasked with deciding if they wanted various entertainment, utilities, groceries, clothing, and even had a “chance” pile where a life event would happen and could either add to their balance or deduct from it. Once completed, students had to tally their totals to see if they had money left over at the end of the month or if their bank account was negative. To say we learned a lot is an understatement! It was definitely an educational experience!

A team of 7th graders recently participated in the second round of the ROE brain games at Rend Lake College. The students were put through various STEAM challenges where they had to work together to come up with answers and solutions. We are very proud of all their hard work throughout the challenges!
Congratulations to the 2023 Red Hill Prom Court. The queen candidates are from left to right, Marina Robles, Madalynn Hulfachor, Tess Heath, Kyra Griesemer, Olivia Ray, and Kamryn Young. King candidates are from left to right, Colin Laakman, Reece Ralston, Landon Phipps, Silas Parrott, Hayden Arbuckle, and Wyatt Cafin. Prom will be held in the North gym on April 29th, with Promenade beginning at 7 and Coronation immediately following. Doors will open at 6:15 and there will $1 charge at the door to attend the coronation for all adults.
